Angelina Jolie admitted to hospital with twins on the way

NICE, France (AFP) - - Hollywood film star Angelina Jolie has checked in to a French maternity clinic and is expected to soon give birth to twins, bringing her brood with Brad Pitt to six, the hospital said Tuesday.

"As part of the normal monitoring of her pregnancy, as it has been arranged for a long time, Ms. Angelina Jolie was admitted to the Lenval Foundation's Santa Maria maternity clinic," said a statement from the Nice-based clinic.

The 33-year-old American actress is expecting twins and will stay in the clinic until she gives birth -- the date of which has not been revealed -- a medical source told AFP.

At the Cannes Film Festival in May, Jolie confirmed she intended to give birth to her twins in France.

Jolie and Pitt, 44, have been the subject of celebrity gossip fascination since they met on the set of their 2005 film "Mr and Mrs Smith" and later began a romantic relationship.

Dubbed "Brangelina", the power couple went on to adopt three children: Maddox, six, born in Cambodia; four-year-old Pax, born in Vietnam; and Zahara, 3, born in Ethiopia. They also had a biological child, Shiloh, born in Namibia in May 2006.

The pair, who frequently top magazine lists of the world's most beautiful people or couple, set up home in May in a chateau they rented from an American acquaintance in France's Provence region.

Jolie hit the Hollywood big-time after winning an Oscar in 1999 for her supporting role as a psychiatric patient in "Girl, Interrupted".

Her role as Lara Croft in the "Tomb Raider" film series beginning in 2001 made her a household name.

Pitt is known for films including "Thelma and Louise", "Legends of the Fall", "Fight Club", "Ocean's Eleven" and "Snatch".

The couple actively support and advocate humanitarian causes. In March it emerged they had funneled more than four million dollars (2.5 million euros) each to a foundation they set up to aid causes around the world.

Last month they donated one million dollars to support the education of 8,000 children in Iraq and the United States affected by war.

"We hope to encourage others to give to these great organizations," Pitt said at the time.

Pitt was previously married to "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston, while Jolie has been married twice before.
